Rat Automated Blood Sampling Plus Infusion

Automated rat blood sampling has become standard practice in busy pharmacokinetics research departments around the world. Automated sampling uses one fluid channel, from catheter to the sampling machine. Administering an IV dose on a second catheter connected to a two-channel Vascular Access Button™ can be done several ways: (1) a manual bolus into the VAB™ port prior to connecting the animal to the sampling tether; (2) a manual bolus into a port at the top of tether; or (3) as shown here, a syringe pump connected to a second continuous channel.

Instech’s ABS2 software can control and monitor a Harvard Apparatus model 11 Elite pump through a USB connection so that the dose timing is perfectly synchronized with the sample timing.
